Acanthus plants have deeply divided and scalloped glossy dark green leaves, which have points but are not prickly. Acanthus spinosus leaves have been used as a decorative motif at the top of Corinthian columns, and in many other architectural and decorative designs.
The strong acanthus flower spikes have purple and white spiny flower trumpets from June almost until autumn.
Acanthus plants are vigorous growers, forming an architectural feature, and need space. The fleshy roots penetrate deep in the soil, and will produce new plants if the clump is dug up.
Acanthus are not fussy about soil type and will grow in sun or partial shade. They are drought tolerant, and flourish particularly in sheltered sunny sites in well-drained soil.
Acanthus hungaricus (Bear's Breeches) Acanthus hungaricus has large lobed leaves with spikes of purple and white flowers up to 100 cm tall in Summer.
Acanthus mollis (Bear's Breeches) Acanthus mollis (Bear's Breeches) forms a large clump, approximately 90 cm high, of dramatic, sculptural deep green leaves. The purple and white flowers bloom on 150 cm flower stalks in summer.

Acanthus mollis 'Hollard's Gold' (Bear's Breeches) Acanthus mollis 'Hollard's Gold (Bear's Breeches) forms a large clump of shining golden yellow leaves. The yellow leaf colour is especially well developed in Spring. The purple and white flowers bloom in summer.
Acanthus spinosus (Bear's Breeches) Acanthus spinosus forms a large clump, approximately 90 - 120 cm high, of dramatic, sculptural deep green leaves. The deeply scalloped leaf shape has been used extensively as a decorative motif since the time of the ancient Greeks. The highly distinctive purple and white flowers, like those in the picture, appear on upright spikes up to 180 cm high in summer.
