Achillea plants generally have attractive fern-like leaves and jewel-like flowers, usually in slightly rounded flat flower heads made up of many small flowers. The plant is named after Achilles, and is said to have been used to treat wounds in the Trojan wars. Achillea plants grow wild in grasslands in Europe and Asia. The common name for achillea is yarrow, which is a wild flower in Britain.
Achillea flower colours are white, red, pink, peach, buff, yellow and orange. They make good cut flowers, and also dried flowers.
Achillea plants usually have a basal rosette of ferny leaves and a wiry flower stem. Typical heights are around 2 feet, although achillea filipendulina grows to about 5 feet, and there are much shorter alpine types. Most achilleas spread quite rapidly by sending out side-shoots at ground level.
Achillea plants thrive in well drained soil and sun, and are drought resistant. They are not fussy about soil type and can withstand hard frosts.
