Aconitum plants are tough and produce spectacular flower spikes. They are a good alternative to delphiniums, where delphiniums will not succeed. The common name for aconitum is monkshood, as the flowers are a similar shape to the hood on a monk’s robes.
Aconitum flower colours range through white, blue, purple and pink. The flowers are out in June to September. They could make a nice looking cut flower, but all parts of the plant are poisonous.
Aconitums have divided green leaves and a flower stem 3 to 6 feet tall. The clumps spread slowly, and produce a number of offset plants.
Aconitum plants will grow in most well-drained garden soils in sun or partial shade. They thrive best in organic soil, and grow well near trees.
Aconitum `Ivorine` (Monkshood) Aconitum 'Ivorine' produces ivory white flower spikes 30-36 inches tall in summer. It is a reliable hardy perennial and can be used as a substitute for delphiniums if delphiniums do not succeed in your garden.
