Agapanthus plants are native to South Africa, where they grow wild in damp grasslands, hence the common name of African Lily. They are excellent plants for containers, where they like being pot bound.
Agapanthus flowers are large flower heads, in shades of blue and white. The flowering period is from July to September. The white flowers are said to be especially attractive to butterflies.
Agapanthus plants form dense, slowly expanding clumps of strap-like leaves 1 to 2 feet tall and 1-3 feet across. The fleshy flower stalks are 1 to 3 feet tall.
Agapanthus plants flourish in moist well drained soil in full sun. They are drought resistant, and also grow well in moist soil beside pools. Agapanthus plants are generally moderately hardy. They can stand moderate frosts, but may need protection from very hard frosts. Headbourne Hybrids is said to be one of the hardier types. They grow well in containers.
