Ajuga flowers are small trumpets, usually a shade of blue, on 4-12 inch spikes in April to June. Bees are attracted to ajuga flowers. There are a number of ajuga plants with multicoloured leaves in various shades: for example pink/burgundy, green and cream; yellowish cream, orange and bronze; bronze and green.
Ajuga plants spread via runners, and a single plant can carpet quite a large area, given time and favourable growing conditions.
Ajuga plants thrive in moist soil and partial shade. Ajugas are not particularly fussy as to soil type, and will grow in moist clayey soil.
Ajuga reptans `Catlin's Giant` (Bugle) Ajuga reptans ?Catlin?s Giant? is much larger and more showy than most or all of the other bugles. The attractive metallic brownish purple to green foliage carpets the ground in shade or sun. The flower spikes approximately 30 cm tall carry rich metallic blue flowers in spring.
Ajuga reptans `Multicolor` (Bugle) Ajuga reptans 'Multicolor' is a very colourful low groundcover plant. The evergreen leaves are purple, green, brown, cream and white, making a very striking low groundcover. In early summer, the 15-20cm flower heads are covered in intense sky blue flowers.
