Aster plants (or Michaelmas Daisies, as they are commonly known) occur in a number of types. The traditional michaelmas daisy is aster novi-belgii, of which there are numerous varieties from 1 to 5 feet tall. Aster novae-angliae is generally similar to novi-belgii, although novae-angliae plants are not affected by mildew, and are particularly vigorous growers. Aster amellus and x frikartii types have rather larger flowers and are 1-2 feet tall.
Aster novi-belgii and novae-angliae flowers are produced as clouds of daisy-like flowers about 1 inch across. The colours are white, pink, red, blue, lilac and purple. Most aster flowers are single or semi-double, with yellow centre, although there are some fully double flowered varieties.
Aster plants produce a rosette of green leaves, which spreads to form a large clump. The flower stalks are 1 to 5 feet tall.
Aster plants like moist well drained soil and sun or partial shade. They grow wild in and around woods in North America, so they are suitable for planting among shrubs and trees as well as in flower borders.
Aster lateriflorus `Lady in Black` (Michaelmas Daisy) Aster lateriflorus 'Lady in Black' (Michaelmas Daisy) sends up dark purple/green leaves through the summer, and then produces masses of pink centred white small daisy like flowers in autumn. It is about 4 feet tall.

Aster novae-angliae `Purple Dome` (New England Aster) Aster novae-angliae ?Purple Dome? is covered with vivid purple daisy-like flowers from late summer right through the autumn. The height is around 75 cm.
Aster novi-belgii `Lady in Blue` (Michaelmas Daisy) Aster novi-belgii 'Lady in Blue' is a fine dwarf variety of Michaelmas Daisy about two feet tall with rich blue semi-double flowers in the Autumn. The plant has a compact habit.
Aster x frikartii Monch (Michaelmas Daisy) Aster x frikartii 'M?nch' is not as common as some michaelmas daisies and could be more widely grown. The yellow eyed large lavender blue flowers are carried on stems 70cm tall from July into the autumn. It does not suffer from mildew like the true michaelmas daisies.
