Astilbes are excellent plants for boggy or moist and well drained soil in sun or partial shade. The finely divided foliage forms an attractive green or bronze mound throughout the spring and summer, and the flower plumes are superb. Astilbes also make very good plants for containers, and were a common house plant in Victorian times.
Astilbe plants flower from June to August or September. The colours of the feathery flower heads may be white, pink, lilac or red. Astilbe flowers last a long time and make good cut flowers.
Astilbes vary in height from less than 1 foot to 6 feet. The clumps will expand slowly.
Astilbe plants require soil that does not dry out in Summer. Although astilbes make very good bog plants, in full sun or partial shade, they will grow in well drained soil, providing they are watered adequately in hot dry weather. Drip irrigation or flooding is more effective that overhead watering for this purpose, and a rich organic soil and partial shade will also help the plants.
