Campanula plants are known as bell flowers because their flowers are bell shaped. There is a wide range of campanulas, ranging from alpine plants under 6 inches tall to border perennials over 5 feet high.
Campanula flowers are generally blue, lilac or purple. There is a white flowered variety of many campanula species, and some campanulas have spotted flowers (e.g. campanula takesimana). The flowering period is May to September.
The taller campanula plants produce a rosette of green leaves, which generally increases in size with time. Some species spread more rapidly with time (e.g. campanula takesimana). While some species self seed prolifically (e.g. campanula latifolia). The flower stalks rise up from the basal rosette in Summer. The alpine campanulas form spreading clumps.
Campanulas will grow in any reasonable garden soil, in sun or partial shade.

Campanula carpatica (Bell Flower) Campanula carpatica is a superb low growing plant for groundcover, an alpine bed or a container. The clear blue flowers are out in Summer and the evergreen foliage forms a slowly spreading carpet about 10cm thick and about 30cm across.
