Dahlia plants were introduced to Europe from Mexico at the end of the 18th Century, and were initially seen as a vegetable. However, it did not take long for their exceptional flower colours to be appreciated, and dahlias were soon grown as an ornamental plant.
Dahlia 'Bishop of Llandaff' and Dahlia 'David Howard', which was originally a seedling from a Bishop of Llandaff plant, are superb flowering plants for a hot coloured border in July to October.
Dahlia plants are killed by frost. The tubers are generally dug up in the autumn and over wintered in dry peat in a frost free shed. The tubers are then potted up in Spring and planted out after frosts have passed. If the dahlia plant is grown in a container, then the container can be placed in a dry frost free shed in winter.
In the warm sheltered locations in the milder parts of the UK, it seems that the tubers may be able to be over-wintered in the ground in mild winters, especially if the soil is covered during cold spells.
Dahlia 'Bishop of Llandaff' Dahlia 'Bishop of Llandaff is a classic plant with scarlet single flowers and bronze-purple, almost black, foliage, for summer bedding and specimen planting.
Dahlia 'David Howard' Dahlia 'David Howard' has superb dark foliage and burnt orange double flowers in Summer. It is about 3 feet tall.
