Dicksonia antartica (Soft Tree Fern)

The soft tree fern (Dicksonia antartica) produces huge green fronds in Spring. The roots join together to form a 'trunk', which grows about 1 inch per year.
This spectacular plant, which as supplied as a decent sized fern which has yet to grow a trunk, requires rich well drained slightly acid soil and dappled shade. The crown should be protected in winter by wrapping it with straw or dead fronds. This plant is a native of woodlands in SE Australia and Tasmania, where it does experience cold conditions.
