The male fern (Dryopteris filix-mas) is a beautiful and versatile plant for sun or shade. It is a fine foliage plant for the border, a great container plant, wonderful in the wild garden, and will flourish in those shady spots where little else will grow at all. The lovely pale green fronds come up each spring and form an expanding clump 60 - 120 cm high and wide. It will often self 'seed' from spores.
This plant will grow in sun or shade and in wet or dry conditions. The one in the picture is growing on a piece of old decaying wall (i.e. very dry conditions).
Detailed growing instructions are supplied with the Dryopteris filix-mas (Male Fern) plants, and can be viewed here.
