Echinacea are reliable late summer flowering plants closely related to rudbeckia. They grow wild in North America. The flowers have a large central cone, surrounded by daisy-like petals, hence the common name of ‘coneflower’. Echinacea plants are widely used as medicinal herbs, as well as decorative flowers.
Echinacea plants flower in late summer (July to September). The traditional flower colours are the purple of echinacea purpurea, and varieties, and the white forms of echinacea purpurea. Recently a much wider range of flower colours, especially hot, orange and yellow shades, have become available (e.g. Sundown, Art’s Pride, Sunrise and Harvest Moon). These new varieties also have a strong sweet spicy scent.
The growth of echinaceas is upright, with a moderate spread. The flower heads are 2-4 feet high. Echinacea plants can be divided carefully in spring, and dead-heading may extend the flowering season.
Echinacea plants will grow in most well drained garden soil. They prefer deep rich well drained soil and a sheltered sunny site.
Echinacea pupurea Bressingham Hybrids (Coneflower) Echinacea pupurea Bressingham Hybrids (Cone Flower) produces large reddish-purple flowers with a central cone. The height is around 3 feet. The flowers are out from July to September.
Echinacea purpurea `White Swan` (Coneflower) Echinacea pupurea 'White Swan' is a fine white flowered version of the purple cone flower producing white flowers on 2-3 foot stems in late summer to early autumn.
