Echinops are large architectural plants for the back of a sunny border. The leaves are thistle-like and the flowers are globe-shaped, hence the common name of globe thistle.
Echinops flowers are generally metallic blue globes 2 or 3 inches in diameter. Butterflies and bees are attracted to echinops flowers, which are out in July and August. The flowers can be cut, and dried.
