Lobelia cardinalis 'St Elmo's Fire' is probably without equal for the intensity of its scarlet flowers and the deep red of its foliage. The flower stem rises about 2 to 3 feet above the basal rosette of leaves in late summer.
This plant will grow in any reasonable garden soil in sun. It can be grown in the flower border or as an aquatic marginal plant, as it thrives in wet conditions.
