Monarda plants have very fragrant leaves, with a scent similar to earl grey tea, and brightly coloured flowers with characteristic ragged petals. The leaves are used in pot-pourris and to make Oswego tea. Monarda plants are commonly known as bergamot. The cultivars grown as ornamental plants are closely related to monarda didyma, which is a native of the eastern USA.
Monarda plants produce red, pink, purple or white flowers from June to September.
Monarda grows 2-4 feet tall in moist rich soil, with lower plants in drier soil. Monarda plants spread via surface runners, and can cover quite a large area under favourable conditions.
Monarda plants prefer moist rich well drained soil, and a warm sunny sheltered site, although they will grow in partial shade. They do not like very dry conditions.
Monarda `Fishes` (`Pisces`) (Bergamot) Monarda 'Fishes' (Pisces) is a fine Bergamot or Bee Balm with pale pink flowers on 4 foot tall flower stems in summer. The mildew resistant leaves are fragrant, and can be used to make a herbal tea. The flavour is very like earl grey tea.
