Osmunda purpurascens (Purple Royal Fern)

The Purple Royal Fern (Osmunda regalis purpurascens) is the purple leaved variety of the Royal Fern. The young fronds are purplish copper in Spring, fading to green. The stems remain purple.
It is a magnificent plant up to 150cm high when fully grown. In Summer it sends up some brownish spore bearing fronds, which look a little like faded flowers, amongst the normal deciduous green two pinnate leaves. Hence it is sometimes called the flowering fern. It likes moist humus rich-soil and is happy in full sun or partial shade.
