The Royal Fern (Osmunda regalis) is the largest native British fern. It is a magnificent plant up to 180cm high when fully grown.
In Summer it sends up some brownish spore bearing fronds, which look a little like faded flowers, amongst the normal deciduous green two pinnate leaves. Hence it is sometimes called the flowering fern.
