Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii (Chinese Lantern) is grown for its brightly coloured balloon-like orange-red husks containing orange/scarlet berries, which cover the plant in autumn. The small nodding cream flowers are out in June and July. The height is about 30 inches.
This plant prefers full sun and a moist well drained soil.
