Viola odorata (Sweet Violet)

Sweet Violet (viola odorata) is one of the first woodland plants to flower in early spring. It can easily be naturalized under cool shady conditions in the garden, and will spread by sending out runners as well as by self sowing.
It will grow in sun or shade and in dry or wet soil, perhaps being happiest in moisture retentive humus rich soil in partial shade, and is not usually affected by pests and diseases. Fritillary butterflies are attracted to violets.
